Lye Concentration vs Water-to-Lye Ratio in Soap Making
Understand lye concentration, water-to-lye ratio, and liquid as a percentage of oils without mixing incompatible calculation methods.
Lye concentration
Lye concentration expresses the alkali as a percentage of the complete lye solution: lye divided by lye plus liquid. A 33% concentration is roughly one part lye to two parts liquid. Higher concentration means less liquid in the solution.
Water-to-lye ratio
A water-to-lye ratio describes the same relationship from the other direction. A 2:1 ratio means two parts liquid for each part lye. Concentration and ratio can be converted into each other, so select one method rather than applying both adjustments.
Liquid as a percentage of oils
This older method bases liquid on oil weight rather than on the calculated lye. Because different recipes require different lye amounts, it can produce inconsistent concentrations across oil blends. FormuMate supports it for familiar workflows while showing concentration and ratio as clearer alternatives.
